AWARD-WINNING PHOTOGRAPHER ERIC MEOLA
SPEAKS IN SAN DIEGO NOVEMBER 18
BOOK DEPICTS THE WORLD’S VANISHING CULTURES

In conjunction with the release of his first book, Lucie Award winning photographer Eric Meola (click here for Eric's Biography in PDF format) will speak on Thursday, November 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater at the Museum of Photographic Arts, Balboa Park, San Diego. A reception for Meola precedes the talk at 6:00 p.m.

The book, entitled LAST PLACES ON EARTH, is an extraordinary collection of over 100 full-color images of remote and exotic places of the world. The inspiration for the project came in 1995, when Meola got what he calls “the assignment of a lifetime” from Kodak to photograph the most remote regions of the world, to capture what remains of centuries-old civilizations before they succumb to modernization.

Meola won a 2004 Lucie Award for his book, one of the highest honors presented annually in the field of photography.

In 1996, Meola set out on an epic journey that took him to Burma, Niger, Ethiopia, Laos, China, Nepal, Cambodia. Indonesia, Egypt, New Guinea, India, and Antarctica. He took thousands of pictures, often at great personal risk.

Meola’s goal was to photograph exotic cultures without disturbing them. His images of indigenous peoples and native wildlife range from startling to breathtakingly beautiful, but all are intriguing.

Meola’s images also capture a range of ceremonies and rituals: a very young boy having his hair shaved off in preparation for becoming a Buddhist monk, a praying sadhu in Varinasi on the holy Ganges, women carrying on their heads 3-foot-tall pillars of fresh fruit for a village feast, nomadic Wodaabe tribesmen of Niger, spectacularly adorned for the “yaake” dance in their Geerewohl festival.

The sense of serenity and composure comes through not only in Meola’s portraits of people, but also in his photographs of wildlife.

LAST PLACES ON EARTH is a powerful and deeply personal visual record of landscapes, customs, ceremonies and wildlife that are seldom seen and may soon disappear. The photographer’s travels were supported by the Eastman Kodak Company and the book was supported in part by Canon USA.

Camera aficionados will appreciate the appendix of full-color mini-reproductions of every photograph in the book with detailed descriptions of the Canon lens used for each image. The book is published by Graphis U.S. and available in stores beginning October 25th, 2004.
